At noon on Tuesday, some church bells and carillons in the Netherlands didn’t sound like they usually do. Rather than solemnly tolling, they played the melody of “Europapa,” the song that was supposed to be the Dutch entry in the Eurovision Song Contest final this past Saturday. Dutch radio stations are also regularly playing the three-minute pop song, and some fans have added the hashtag “JusticeforJoost” to their social media accounts. Support is strong in the Netherlands for Joost Klein, the singer behind “Europapa,” who was a preshow favorite among Eurovision fans and bookmakers until he was disqualified just hours before the final in Malmo, Sweden. Eurovision’s organizer, the European Broadcasting Union, barred Klein from taking part after an “incident” during which he showed “threatening behavior directed at a female member of the production crew,” it said in a statement.

Bas said AI can't yet replicate human experiences and evoke emotions in music. Bas said human taste is essential to helping AI make music enjoyable. "The core of writing music, you're trying to evoke an emotion out of your audience, whether it's joy, heartbreak, whatever the case may be," Bas said at the "Leading with AI" conference this week. With AI tools, "when I try to give it those prompts, it's a little tough to get that across." Kim Jong Un's latest propaganda song, "Friendly Father," is trending on TikTok. The song is part of North Korea's strategy to embed ideological messages in catchy pop tunes. AdvertisementNorth Korean leader Kim Jong Un dropped his latest propaganda song a fortnight ago, and the synth-pop track is seemingly winning over TikTokers, BBC News reported. With its upbeat tempo and catchy melody, "Friendly Father" is reminiscent of an ABBA track — but with a Soviet-sounding twist. While experts say the song is a calculated attempt to feed state propaganda to the masses, TikTokers are just enjoying the tune.

The album follows Swift's breakup with British actor Joe Alwyn, her longtime muse and collaborator. Alwyn likely earned millions from the six songs he cowrote with Swift. It's the first set of new music since Swift's breakup with British actor Joe Alwyn was confirmed in April 2023. But if some of the songs expose details about their relationship, you shouldn't feel too bad for Alwyn. He has likely earned millions from Swift's songs already, according to multiple reports.

CNN —A woman in Arizona pleaded guilty this week to attempting to poison her husband’s coffee every day for months, court documents show. The defendant’s husband, Roby Johnson, told investigators he “believes she was trying to kill him to collect death benefits,” according to a criminal report obtained last year by CNN affiliate KVOA. Roby Johnson said he first noticed a foul taste to his coffee in March 2023 while he was an airman stationed in Germany, the document says. Roby Johnson told investigators he pretended to continue drinking the coffee so he could wait until they returned to Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson before filing a police report. For some budding musicians (and even old pros), the very sight of sheet music can elicit a fight-or-flight response, bringing up painful memories of strict piano teachers and high-pressure recitals. George Collier, a 20-year-old music transcriber, is doing his part to change that. Another clip, titled “She Practiced 40 Hours a Day for This,” captures a virtuosic Mozart piano cadenza by Mitsuko Uchida. While Collier specializes in jazz, he also showcases performances from the classical world, as well as everyday people with impressive talents. A clip titled “When Your Family Is Musically Competent” features a version of “Happy Birthday” that turns into improvised gospel-laden riffing.

The images and sounds from A24's "Zone of Interest," which has earned a little over $24 million at the global box office, have haunted me since that weekend. More precisely, he tells the story of Rudolf Höss, the camp commander of Auschwitz, one of the worst criminals of National Socialism. However, Grande did "Eternal Sunshine" a disservice with its title and marketing. But asked if she planned to "address things" with "Eternal Sunshine," Grande demurred. Sure, you could say that Grande doesn't owe us honesty or specificity, and you might be right. As a staunch believer in the album as an art form, "Eternal Sunshine" left me wanting. The people streaming into the holy town came on an intimate quest: to be among the first to seek the blessings of a beloved god they said was returning home after 500 years. These Hindu devotees took leaves of absence from work. They ate with fellow pilgrims, slept in the cold and sipped tea at roadside joints as they waited to see the dazzling new temple devoted to the deity Ram. Early in the morning, as a soft devotional melody played from speakers strung to electric poles, they took purifying dips in a river. But it was another, smaller group, camped on the riverbank in Ayodhya, that made sure the moment was as much about India’s powerful prime minister, Narendra Modi, as it was about Lord Ram.

Fixed indexed annuity sales brought in a record $95.6 billion, up from 20% from the record hit the year prior. Indexed annuities earn interest that is calculated based on the changes within a market index, such as the S & P 500 or the Nasdaq 100. However, they also receive downside protection: They are credited zero interest if the index their annuity is tracking declines. The term of index annuities typically range from three to 15 years, according to Annuity.org . Fixed indexed annuities can also be complicated, warned David Blanchett, head of retirement research for PGIM DC Solutions.

Mental Acuity Questions Catch Up With Trump

"Some people at Biden's and Trump's age are in a nursing home. Still, questions about the mental capacities of both Biden and Trump have been an issue in the campaign. How could they go after Trump's mental state without drawing attention to Biden's age – a factor polls show is one of his greatest vulnerabilities? Her youth and GOP membership make her a good person to challenge Trump on his mental acuity, but it's "too little, too late," he says. "The reason Trump's age has generally not been an issue is [because of] the energy around his supporters and the energy directed at him from his supporters.

In Praise of Whistling in Pop Music

On Monday, Joel announced he’ll be releasing his first new pop single in nearly two decades next week. While listening to “The Stranger” over the weekend, I found myself considering the pop musical whistle. It’s such a simple expression, but in a song it can convey a wide range of feelings and tones. While we await Joel’s latest, “Turn the Lights Back On” (which may or may not feature a whistle break), today’s playlist is a homage to the pop musical whistle, in all its glory and multitudes. And if you don’t know how to whistle along, you can always consult Lauren Bacall.

Melody and Jeremiah McKay had never heard of Carmel, Ind., before they read about it online. At the time, they were living in a roughly 1,000-square-foot home in Los Angeles County with their four children, and looking for a more affordable area. They filled out an online survey that recommended several places around the country, including Indiana’s Hamilton County, about 30 miles north of Indianapolis. When the McKays googled the area, they found a lot of press on the small city of Carmel, said Jeremiah, 39, a 3D artist.
